Part 3 of the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Rei OVA series, and this continues from the previous episode of Rika being lost in an instance of Hinamizawa that had no Dam War, and no Maebara Keiichi.  The rather straightforward and plodding nature of the episode takes away from what’s supposed to be a chilling ending, but it’s still a good watch.

Then again, I may be another Higurashi fan just itching for more.  See what you think after the jump.

Summary:

With Rika coming to the realization that this is a very different Hinamizawa than usual, she immediately sets off to find Hanyuu.  However, her ghostly friend doesn’t respond to her calls until she enters the shrine.  There, Hanyuu’s faint voice is heard from one of the family relics, a jewel that acts as a ‘tranceiver’ between the world shards.  Hanyuu explains Rika’s rather grisly end in the other world, and also that she cannot enter Rika’s current world because something is rejecting her.  Rika decides to go look for whatever is keeping Hanyuu away; a new caveat is that without Hanyuu, if Rika is killed in this world, it’s all over.

Back at school, Satoko continues to confront Rika, making life for her miserable.  Making things even worse, Hanyuu tells Rika that whatever is holding her back may be in a person – and a most unfortunate end would meet them.  Praying otherwise, Rika continues her search, beginning with her mother.  Thankfully, she feels nothing, and continues on.  However, frustrated with Satoko’s antics at taking away some old documents of hers, Rika ends up beating the annoying Houjou child with a chair, earning both of them a principal’s time out.  In the clinic, Rika decides to talk to Yamamoto about her situation, and the good doctor is seemingly understanding of her predicament and offers to help in any way he can…after hearing Hanyuu’s voice in the marble, at least.

Rika returns to the classroom and the day ends without event.  As people begin to go home, Satoshi, Mion and Rena pull Rika aside and try to convince her to join their group of friends so everybody can get along.  Mion isn’t terribly thrilled with Rika, but is willing to put up with her in order to promote peace in the classroom.  Through their conversation, Rika finds that her counterpart from her current world was much more secretive and manipulative than her ‘normal’ self, and suddenly understands why she’s at odds with everybody else.  With Satoshi trying to convince Satoko to join, Rika promises to think about it and departs.

Back at home, Rika is torn about living with her family or trying to return to the world that had been freed from the curse of Hinamizawa.  Rika’s mother, however, finds out that Rika told Yamamoto about being the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama.  Rika denies any validity, claiming she was just messing with the doctor; however, Rika’s mother reveals that, through the pattern of the Furude lineage, she is the true incarnation of Oyashiro-sama.  Pulled close, Rika suddenly realizes there’s a strange aura about her, and her worst fears have come true..

Impressions:

• You didn’t honestly one of the regular characters to carry this ‘rejecting force’, did you?  Obviously it was one of the new characters.  The chances of it being Satoshi would be slim at best, since his involvement in the OVA so far has been minimal.  Ditto to the Furude priest, aka Rika’s father, who has yet to have a line in the OVA.  That leaves…well, Yamamoto and Rika’s mother.  The fact that they went to her first kind of tripped my alarm that it would be her.  Also…it just seems so RIGHT in the Higurashi world, doesn’t it?
• Speaking of which, Rika’s mother is beautiful.
• Was never a big fan of Satoko, but this is just ridiculous.  Is this how she was before, when her brother was around?  No wonder she got abused by everybody.  She’s incredibly annoying when she has her pride.  Rika must be insanely weak if she trashed Satoko with a chair and she walked away with a scratch, though.
• So?  Would you give up and live with your family and build your relationship with your friends all over again, or would you go back to the world you worked so hard to liberate from the curse?  Very tough call.  I’d expect the latter in this series, but you could definitely make arguments either way.

…here’s a bit of help.  Amusingly, I find myself in the realm of awkwardness quite a bit..or maybe, not so amusingly.

More anime-related stuff soon.  Also coming soon, stuff I’m doing with my car!  Time to spice things up around here.  Kudos to a buddy who found this for me, and for the original author for coming up with the idea.  I like it.

Why am I doing this…?

Honestly, I have no idea.  Something about my being a ‘completionist’ – OVA1 is done, might as well do OVA2.  Not like it took a lot of brain power anyway.  Enjoy the screenshots after the break.

Summary:

Mikan is spacing out on the couch, reminiscing of her younger days playing with Rito in the snow.  Rito snaps her back out of it, but then proceeds to have all sorts of mischief with Lala, from a habanero shaved ice, to refusing a telemarketer while trying to get Lala to put more clothes on, and failing miserably to do the laundry.  It all ends up with Mikan extremely irritated with Rito and his ‘wife’, and she storms out of the house on her own with no particular direction in mind.

Rito gives chase, but Mikan has too much of a head start.  Eventually he finds himself in a Tenjouin-owned mall complex, who tries to help out but confuses ‘Mikan’ with ‘mikan’…that is, oranges.  Even the level-headed Kotegawa is unable to stop Saki’s antics, and everything culminates with a yakiniku-battle between a nearly naked Lala and a swimsuit wearing Saki.  With one too salty and one too hot, as well as nearly everybody’s clothes coming off, Saki eventually lets Rito and Lala on their way, where they eventually split up to look for Mikan.  Rito hears from Sairenji where his little sister is, and runs for it.

Yami, who had been keeping Mikan company, departs so Rito and Mikan can be together.  For the most part, Mikan teases her older brother, but is happy to be spending time with Rito again.  They eventually return to the park they played in as children, where Lala decides to help out by creating a little bit of snow to get the ‘mood’ back in the park, but it all goes a bit awry as the city is slammed with a blizzard.

Impressions:

• Do I really need to say anything else?
• …
• Fine, in a nutshell: what are you doing watching this for story?  It’s rubbish.  But at least they gave a worthwhile character (read: Mikan) plenty of screentime.  A little Yami doesn’t hurt either, I guess.
• See below.  Something about censorship is floating around Japan, so I’d love to know how many politicians went “WHAT THE F***?!” at this.

The series picks up its pace as it nears the conclusion of its 26-episode run, and things get even more hectic with the return of a Season 1 fan favorite: Tsugumi!  Well…a grown up Tsugumi, at least.  Anyway, heads will spin, as math and science explain the concept of Hell in this episode of Jigoku Shoujo!

Summary:

Yuzuki sees a vision in which she is running to the roof of a building to stop someone from using the Jigoku Tsuushin.  Amusingly enough, she is overtaken by a young girl wearing butterfly earrings; however, both aren’t able to make it in time, and another soul is cast into Hell.  Shortly after, Yuzuki awakens in the infirmary, where Shibata Tsugumi, wearing her butterfly earrings, is working.  Yuzuki finally gets around to asking Tsugumi what she meant during the Six-Mon Lantern Festival, but only gets a laugh in reply.

Outside, the Jigoku Tsuushin crew is amazed that they missed Tsugumi’s presence in the school.  In fact, the only reason they found out was because someone was rather persistent in putting her name in the website.  Away from the school, Yamawaro and Kikuri investigate an old mansion where the request seemingly originated from, but are blocked by a barrier that even they cannot cross.

In the evening, both Ai and Yuzuki are enjoying themselves (Ai with a bath, Yuzuki with a phone call to her parents), but both seem to understand that something is happening with the Jigoku Tsuushin.  Moments later, Tsugumi even notices that her name has been put into the website.  Tsugumi seems resigned to her fate in Hell, but she quickly changes her mind when Kikyou, a servant for a certain Mizorogi, arrives and expresses Mizorogi’s interest in Hajime’s book.  Everybody seems to get the same address, and meet at the old mansion: Hone-Onna, Ichimoku Ren, Wanyuudou, Yuzuki, Ai, Kikyou and Tsugumi.

As they venture inside, they come across a machine that generated the barrier from earlier.  Ai, bemused that such a machine can create a supernatural existence, destroys it with some psychic punches.  Further inside, the entire group meets the man who has called the meeting: Mizorogi Shougo, a well-known scientist and mathematician.  Mizorogi immediately confirms that he had no idea who Tsugumi was, but respected Hajime for his work.  Mizorogi himself had been active in the sciences, but disappeared after he realized his work proved the existence of alternate worlds, namely, Hell.

Mizorogi continues to elaborate on his experiences, starting from his childhood, as he watched his mother use the Jigoku Tsuushin herself.  With his studies based on Shibata Hajime’s book, he traced the history of Jigoku Tsuushin, and also learned that their activities tended to concentrate in a particular area.  The cases in Saigawara led him to believe the Jigoku Tsuushin was at work, and the preparations were made so that he could speak with Ai in person.  With some brainwashing tactics, Mizorogi is capable of hating Tsugumi enough to access Jigoku Tsuushin.  Ai and the others freely admit that there have been instances where they felt the damning was wrong, but what could they do?  This is their job, regardless of its irrationality.

Mizorogi, content with his explanation, prepares to pull the string and observe what happens as Tsugumi is sent to Hell.  However, he is stopped short by Kikyou pulling a string off of his straw doll.  The doll symbolized the hatred of all the children Mizorogi had taken care of in his vain attempt to atone for killing their parents through his research.  As he departs for Hell, he wonders if he will see his mother again.  Meanwhile, Yuzuki pleads Tsugumi for help, but the school nurse simply states that destiny cannot be changed, and walks away..

Impressions:

• You have no idea how difficult all that talk about Heisenberg uncertainty principle and irrationality was to understand in raw Japanese.  That stuff is definitely NOT on the proficiency test.  Still, it’s really interesting to see an almost philosophical argument in the series.  It’s an age old question, right?  Do Heaven and Hell exist?  Mizorogi seemed to have determined their existence through science.
• Quite a bleak social commentary, if you think about it.  Constrained by the rules of morality and social decency, science states that a certain level of chaos results in the creation of Hell, a place of irrationality, a place where the dregs of humanity provide counterpoint to the normal world.  How’s that for a morning thought?
• Note to any character in the Jigoku Shoujo series: do NOT mess with Ai, she can rip you apart by staring at you and pointing her fist at a certain angle.
• Tsugumi is really one of the darkest characters in the series now.  She’s definitely not that little girl being haunted by Ai’s image.  Instead, she has this almost fatalistic tone to her character, and I’m not sure if it’s something I like.  Then again, after years of failure to stop Jigoku Tsuushin, I guess anybody would be pretty depressed, right?  Poor girl’s been through so much.
• So I tried putting strawberry jam in my English tea, and I thought it tasted awful.  What the hell, Yuzuki?
• On second thought, Ai might be the most compassionate person in this entire series.  She’s a ferrier of souls to Hell, that much is true, but what other character has been through so much, and yet still shoulders all of the burden?  She carries the weight of her village, the weight of all the souls she sends to Hell, and seems to geniunely care about her jobs.  That’s in rather stark contrast to season 1, where she basically didn’t give a damn until she got riled up and went RAAAAAAAGE on everybody.  There’s plenty of characters to like, but I’m sure Ai ranks waaay up there.

With this, I finally close Tales of the Abyss. I haven’t gotten around to 25 and 26 for a while, and that’s mostly because…well, didn’t really want to watch it much, really. Got REALLY hard after I started watching other series, too.  Higashi no Eden and K-On are so ridiculous they’re actually interesting to me.  Other things to worry about too.

In a nutshell, Abyss is one of the better adventures series to come out in recent years, but I don’t think I’ll be rewatching it anytime soon. Not while the game is sitting on my desk, at least.

Short summaries and final impressions following the break.

Wagering your Existence

With the Albiore III in pieces, Asch rushes in, leaving Ginji behind.  Soon enough, Noelle lands properly, and Luke and company leave her to tend to her brother as they rush in to catch up with Asch.  They quickly catch up with Asch, and sure enough, a hole in the floor separates them from the rest of the party.  Tear / Guy / Anise / Jade fend off Sync and Legretta, Tear’s former teacher.  Of course, Tear has to question Legretta first before starting the fight, and learns that Legretta is supporting Van purely out of gratitude.  Angered at her lack of free will, Tear attacks Legretta, the Oracle Knight she once admire.  Anise has her own personal duel with Sync, aka Ion, who taunts her about having to kill someone twice over.  Anise, however, is steadfast in her ideals and rushes Sync.  Down below, Asch and Luke have at it, “wagering their existence” to determine who deserves to live.

Suffice it to say that much chattering and battling occurs, and Jade eventually joins in Tear’s fight, citing that although he isn’t a fan of the Score, he didn’t come up with fomicry for it to be abused.  With Tear finally casting her artes, and backed up by Jade, Legretta eventually falls.  On the other side, Anise successfully defeats Sync (also with a little bit of support), and the group marches on.  Meanwhile, Luke and Asch are done with their personal duel, with Luke outplaying his true self.  Asch stays behind to delay the Oracle Knights’ advances as long as he can.  However, even a God General can only take so much, and Asch eventually falls.  Luke realizes this, but presses on with his friends to the final boss: Van.

A New World

At the top level of Eldrant is Van.  The team approaches cautiously, then decides to unleash everything on him.  However, Van is nearly indestructible to all of their attacks, until Tear starts singing her fonic hymns.  With the fonons around Van disrupted, Luke combines the Key and Jewel of Lorelei and pierces his heart.  Van disappears, and Eldrant begins to fall apart.  In classic hero fashion, Luke stays behind to deal with the ramifications of his actions, and the others say their goodbyes.  Luke promises that he’ll return someday.  Tear, unable to say it directly, whispers that she loves him before running.  The Key drops, Luke and Asch are reunited again, and the fight is over.

Years later, Tear returns to the outlook where everything started for her.  The others also look on, but eventually turn back.  Tear is surprised, however, to see a red-headed man with the Key of Lorelei walking towards her..

Impressions:

• If you haven’t noticed, I lost interest.  I’m bemused by the slavish adherence to the game’s storyline.  As noted elsewhere, the end sequence probably could’ve been lifted from the game itself, and we would’ve been none the wiser.   A note to other game -> anime producers: INJECT SOMETHING NEW INTO IT.  At least twist something!  26 episodes and all I did was “yep, yep…did that..uh huh.”
• Something that really cheapens the series a lot is the fact that when people die, nobody had more than…15 seconds of on-screen regret.  You’d think it’d be kind of rough, but nope, not in the Abyss world.
• I know Van is the final boss, but whoever decided to use the organ needs to be shot.
• Final opinion: watch it if you’ve never played the game, ignore otherwise.
• Hey I finished a series!  Sort of.  XD

A vast improvement over the last episode, with a very…well, EPIC ending.  Gods, where was this 18 episodes ago!?  Mind you, the ending is still hidden behind the rest of the episode, but at least the plot was a lot more dramatic than a stupid radio show.

Noticed that nobody has ever put up the translation for the full version of ‘storm’, aka Mai Otome Zwei ED2.  I like the song enough that I might actually put it up here.  I’ll have to rummage around for the lyrics.

Summary:

Nakiri Kaori is the successor of a well-known flower arranger who isn’t exactly thrilled with her job.  Instead of attending the funeral service, Kaori goes out on the town, eventually running into a wandering Yuzuki, carrying a bouquet of cast-off flowers Wanyuudou and company had cut from the school fields.  Kaori arranges the flowers in exchange for Yuzuki buying her some yamaimo to eat.  The two become fast friends, but their conversation is cut short by the arrival of Kaori’s escorts, including Tsukio; still somewhat unwilling to go, Kaori drags a hapless Yuzuki along with her.

At the funeral, Yuzuki is surprised to see her three teachers there (aka the disguised Hone-Onna, Wanyuudou, and Ichimoku Ren).  However, everybody else simply sees long-time workers in the Nakiri family.  Later, the Jigoku Tsuushin team raises concerns that Yuzuki can recognize them, but Ai simply states that she may be awakening, and Ai will have to explain things to Yuzuki soon.

Following the funeral, another woman named Kurozaka Yukina steps forward and claims rights to the family’s assets as her birthright between Nakiri’s father and another woman.  Kaori is distressed at the idea of losing her family’s business to someone who clearly cares more about the money than anything else, and confides in her longtime friend Tsukio.  Confides…and then confides a little more intimately.

Meanwhile, Yuzuki is out hunting for her three teachers again.  Having taken pictures of them at school, Yuzuki intends to go to the Nakiri house and compare them to the ‘workers’ she saw the previous night.  However, the pictures disappear from her phone as Ai appears and confirms Yuzuki’s beliefs, saying that the three of them are in her employ.  However, Ai only responds with cryptic answers to Yuzuki’s other questions, leaving the full explanation for later.

At the Nakiri mansion, Tsukio overhears Yukina’s plot to poison Kaori and forcefully take the Nakiri assets.  With the poison put into Kaori’s drink, Tsukio quickly grabs it and chugs the poison himself, exchanging his life for hers.  In a fit of anger, Kaori puts Yukina’s name into Jigoku Tsuushin and is rewarded with a straw doll.  Further compounding the issue is Kodakura (Kaori’s other supporter) revealing the true nature of Nakiri flower arrangements; Hakki-ryu, or the arrangement of flowers for the deceased.  Kaori realizes that this is her lot in life, and pulls the string on her straw doll.  As Yukina descends to Hell, Kaori completes her first project, and accepts Tsukio as her next.

Yuzuki finally catches up to Kaori, but the heiress has changed.  Despite her not wanting to do flower arranging before, Kaori now easily accepts her position as the Nakiri family’s next in line.  Before returning home, Yuzuki gets one more surprise from Ai – the revelation that she will be the next Jigoku Shoujo.

Impressions:

• ANYTHING is better than the BS episode 18.  Stupid radio show, can’t get over how incredibly lame that was.
• This would’ve been a lot better if it didn’t fizzle out at the end.  I guess they were running out of time and just had to make Kaori go through the “change-of-heart” phase really, really quickly.
• Okay, sure, it’s a drama, so obviously Tsukio had to take the bait.  But really, drinking the poison yourself?  Shouldn’t that be…I don’t know, THE LAST OPTION?
• I miss Akie.  It’s kind of surprising, but the levity she brought gave a good contrast to the rest of the cast, especially you know who.  There are series that take itself too seriously, try to do too much with the drama, etc., and JS3 falls into that category.  It doesn’t help that they over-dramatize the oddest of situations (god I’m still ranting about Ep. 18).

• Okay, so the ending pretty much confirms my (and quite possibly everybody else’s) belief that Yuzuki would be the successor of Enma Ai.  Which is weird, because…didn’t Ai get released in Futakomori?  Didn’t her soul get dragged down to Hell, along with all the other villagers?  It’s as if the Hell Spider went “Haha you’re done now…OH WAIT I FORGOT TO GET ANOTHER ONE OH SHI-”  Really odd story lapse here, and I’m kind of curious to see how they explain it.  If they explain it, that is.

Hell Girl vs. Hell Professor.  Literally.

What, did you want Hell Boy again?

To be perfectly honest, I’ve already finished Mitsuganae, but I’ve been far too lazy to actually write about it.  I’ll try to clear the backlog in good time, however.  Meanwhile, only one show has caught me eye so far for the new season: K-On!  The others…well, so far they’re falling flat on their faces, although Tears to Tiara may have SOME promise.  If I clear this backlog in a reasonable amount of time, I’ll start that maybe.  Speaking of backlogs, I’ve had Abyss done for like…ever.

Back to this episode.  Simply put?  I couldn’t buy into this episode at all.  Especially looking at it in hindsight, with so much goodness at the end of the series…meh, well, here you go.  For completeness sake.

Summary:

Late night radio shows seem to be popular amongst the high school girls, and one has taken a particular interest in DJ Joutarou.  Calling herself Chie-san on the show, Chiriko contributes often, and listens almost every night.  Her unabashed fandom of the radio show earns her several supporters in her class, who recognize her as ‘Chie-san’ after she wears her bracelet to school.  With the entire class interested, everybody tunes in that evening to listen to the program.

Chiriko actually believes in the Cinderella-esque magic Joutarou speaks of over the airwaves, and the program has enough support that despite Hone-Onna’s scathing review, even Ai tunes in for the heck of it.  Returning home from school, Chiriko is intercepted by another girl – Kaname, also known as the Frog Princess, a well-known contributor to the same show.  The two get along quite well, given that they both admire the same radio show.  That night, Chiriko is astounded how personal Joutarou seems to connect with her (after all, Joutarou says he likes her type!).  Kaname missed the show for personal reasons, but invites Chiriko to come with her and meet Joutarou and the writer, Yume.

At the station, Kaname reveals that she’s actually a huge fan of Yume’s, not Joutarou’s.  With Chiriko confused, Yume and Kaname discuss the future of a script writer, and Yume actually gives Kaname one of the older scripts for the radio program.  Chiriko finds it hard to accept that the entire thing is scripted until she hears the lines Joutarou spoke the night before.  Yume discusses the joy of creating a character from nothingness, and looks forward to working with Kaname in the future.  Disgusted, Chiriko accesses Jigoku Tsuushin and the next day sends Kaname to Hell for her blasphemy.  Cut to days later, where Chiriko has multiple bells on her bracelet, and is practically hikikomori for Joutarou…

Impressions:
